And again, Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, from the University of Roskilde, Denmark, made another great speech in Tokyo, Japan about the future of sign language and why keeping the mother tongue has never been become so important today.
What happens with endagered languages today? Sad facts about endagered languages are:
- “96% of the world's 6000 languages
are spoken by 4% of the world's
population. - 90% of the world's languages are not
represented on the Internet. - One language disappears on average
every two weeks. - 80% of the African languages have no
orthography” (UNESCO).
The time has come that we Deaf people must be key actors to show the world that sign language is endangered and should be protected as soon as possible.
If you use Tove Skutnabb-Kangas words for your own work, please write her name on the references.
